Sights - Chania County

Sougia

Sougia is situated towards the Libyan Sea. The village has a long beach consisting of sand or pebbles, depending on the weather. A great deal of building has gone on within the last 20 years, and there are now many hotels, restaurants and bars.

Sougia is being visited by people from Chania especially at the weekends.

In addition to the nice swimming facilities the area offers other experiences.

Sougia (Sýia) was existing as early as in antiquity, when it was the port of the ancient town of Elyros, situated at the present Rodovani. A few remains from antiquity still exist - especially on the undeveloped side of the riverbed (Lakkos Zografou).

Among newer sights is worth mentioning the Agios Panteleimonas church, built on top of an early Christian basilica, which was destroyed, probably when the Saracens occupied the island in the 9th century. It is said that a woman from the nearby village of Livadas, dreamed that a church had been situated on the spot and that it ought to be rebuilt.
Sougia has also a small harbour with departures to Agia Roumeli - Loutro - Sfakia in the morning and to Palaiochora in the afternoon.

The harbour is worth a visit, because the old waterline is very clearly seen at the western entrance.

Furthermore you find the entrance to the Sougia Gorge here.

The Sougia gorge
If you need to retire a little from the sometimes hectic life at the beach, a walk into the gorge will be a great relief to your soul.

It may be a little hard to force a big boulder at the beginning of the gorge, but after that there are not any more difficulties. The gorge is impressing from the beginning, with its lushness and steep rock walls.

Numerous birds are chirping, interrupted only by the bells of a few sheep or goats.

After half an hour's walk you reach a path to the left, leading up to the plateau between Sougia and Lissos.

From here there is a beautiful view down over the bay of Sougia and towards Lefka Ori.

It is possible to get down to the ancient Lissos from the plateau.
