Azogyres

The village is situated 7 km northeast of Palaiochora in the middle of the dense vegetation on the mountain slopes. The place is well-known for its numerous shrines. Arriving at the village from Palaiochora, it is a good idea to visit the Alpha restaurant to the left of the road, where the owner is of assistance with a homemade map of the area.

In the year 1300 St. John the Hermit went ashore on the coast south of Azogyres with his 98 monks. They set out into the country through the vigorous gorge and found the caves of Zoures and Charakas on either side of the gorge. Here they settled, performing miracles and preaching the Orthodox faith, which had hard times during the Venetian occupation.
