From being one of the hippies' favorite places in
the 1960s, Matala has in recent years developed into a touristry seaside
resort with lots of hotels, rental rooms, souvenir shops - and even a
payment parking. |

The village has a nice sandy beach, located in a
small bay sheltered from the wind, |

but
most
wellknown
is Matala for its caves, |

In Minoan time, Matala was the port of Phaistos, but
in 220 BC. according to Polybios (2, IV, 55) it was conquered by the
city of Gortyna.
|
Underneath the sea you can still see remains of the
Minoan city and port facilities.
