Panagia Evangelismos

Beďlitika - Kakodiki

The church of Panagia Evangelismos in the area Beďlitika outside Kakodiki is the last chuch, which we for sure know has been decored by Pagomenos.

Unfortunately, it has over the years suffered great damage, and many of its frescoes have been destroyed.

The inscription is situated on the western wall to the left of the entrance door:

There is no single scene depicting the donors, but few of those are incorporated in other scenes. For example these two priests.

There are also depictions of secular persons. Especially the female on the photo to the left is interesting due to her clothing. We find the same kind of clothes represented in the church in Kavallariana.

In the apse the Virgin Mary is depicted, as tradition has it in churches dedicated to her.

In the choir we find the church fathers.

Behind the altar one can notice one of Pagomenos' preferred ornaments, which we also find in many of his other churches.

Next to the templo Panagia with the baby Jesus is seen.

Detail

On the nothern wall Agios Georgios is depicted.

Beneath the inscription we see two female saints, Maria and Paraskevi. Between them is seen another of the donors at the bottom.

On the other side of the door can be seen no less than three female saints. At the top Agia Sofia, at the bottom Agia Irini and one that can not be identified.

Above Agios Georgios we see the remains of a fresco depicting the Koimisi tis Theotokou (Dormition of the Godmother).

There are also remains of the decoration border, running along the floor.

Outside the church is a tomb, which may be Pagomenos'.

I would like to thank the priest Stylianos Loupasis for showing me the church and giving me further explanations.

He, among other things, pointed out that the two walled column pieces must originate from a major basilica in the region, as there are found similar pieces in the nearby church of Agios Isidoros.

In 1938, Anna Loupasi, widow of the pastor's grandfather, paid for the new roof, whereby the frescoes there were destroyed. The alternative, however, had been that the entire church had collapsed.
